7 Ways Use to Essential Oils This Summer

As a mom, my purse (or beach bag!) is always equipped with my DIY summertime must-haves. Whether it’s too much sun or scraped knees, there’s always an essential oil combo I have on hand. Here are my top five favourites.

PS. For younger kids, remember to dilute based on their size. See my blog here on essential oil safety for littles.

1. After Sun Spray

  • 4 oz. glass spray bottle
  • 10 drops each Lavender, Peppermint & Tea Tree
  • Fill with 50/50 witch hazel to aloe vera gel
  • Apply over sunkissed or burned areas

Tip: Try making your own chemical-free sunscreen. Get my DIY Sunscreen here.

2. Cooling Spray

  • 4 oz. glass spray bottle
  • 30 drops peppermint essential oil
  • Fill with water
  • Spray over body especially back of neck.

Tip: You can also apply 1 drop of peppermint to the bottoms of the feet or back of neck for the same results.

3. Car Rides

  • If you’re taking a long car ride and need to keep the energy up diffuse wild orange and peppermint. Bonus? Peppermint helps with motion sickness or nausea.
  • If you’ve got a few crazy kids in the back, diffuse lavender or doterra’s Balance blend.
  • Use a car diffuser or add a few drops to a cotton ball and stick it in your air vent.

Tip: Try doterra’s ZenGest for stubborn motion sickness. Apply to the abdomen as needed.

4. Bug City

First things first, you’re going to want to make my all natural homemade bug spray. Next you’ll need a bug bite soothing stick. Helpful for all types of bites and stings.

  • 10 mL glass roller bottle
  • 15 drops each Lavender and Tea Tree.
  • Top with Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • Apply directly to bites and stings.

5. Tick Spray

  • 4 oz. glass spray bottle
  • 15 drops each doterra’s TerraShield, Eucalyptus & Lemongrass
  • 1 tsp Fractionated Coconut oil
  • Top with water
  • Spray on before going outside – dogs too (just adjust the amounts if you have a small dog)!

Tip: Do NOT use essential oils to remove ticks. Please use a proper tick removal tool.

6. Owie Spray

  • 2 oz. glass spray bottle
  • 10 drops each Lavender, Frankincense & Tea Tree
  • 50/50 ratio of witch hazel and coconut oil
  • Spray on to any summer time owies

Tip: Can also be sprayed on to the bandage portion of the band-aid.

7. Allergies

  • 10 mL glass roller bottle
  • 15 drops each Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint
  • Top with Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • Apply 4x daily or as needed.

SAFETY TIP: Citrus oils are photosensitive and direct exposure to the area should be avoided for 12 hours after applying topically. The following doterra oils are considered photosensitive: Aromatouch, Bergamot, Easy Air, Citrus Bliss, Cumin, Elevation, Grapefruit, InTune, Kumquat, Lemon, Lime, On Guard, Purify, Smart & Sassy, Sunny Citrus, Tangerine, Wild Orange, Zendocrine, Cheer, Motivate, Forgive
